Sylvia Herrera's parents encouraged her interest in art from the very beginning. While still a child, her father would take her to the stationary store, where he bought her the huge assortments of Crayolas - the ones with gold, copper, silver, etc. Seeing that she was Interested, he bought her a drawing book that is now well worn. There was another book that they bought her as well. This is what she thinks sparked an interest in watercolor. The book was called "Patty Paints a Picture." It was a story about a girl who wanted to paint a picture of her kitten. She brought it to art class. The class was held in a museum. There the kitten got loose and created quite a stir. The book showed how various students created different effects by the amount of water used on the paper. This story intrigued the impressionable little girl who was obviously attracted to the medium.

Sylvia is primarily a watercolorist. She is a native Californian who spent eight years living in the Hawaiian Islands. She now resides in Tucson, Arizona, and is a part-time resident of Kauai, Hawaii. She is a "warm weather" person. She has traveled extensively in Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and many parts of the United States. She has also visited Tahiti, Greece, and Turkey. She is an adventurous person who loves to see and taste new things.

She has studied with many excellent watercolor teachers, and feels extremely privileged to have spent over ten years studying with Helen Reed. She likes to spend at least one day a week painting with other accomplished artists so that she can receive feedback about her work.

She prefers the use of bold, vibrant, pure color in her work. She loves exotic, tropical and southwestern subject material.

Sylvia has a desire to point out the beauty that God has created in nature. She feels that it is important to dwell on the beauty of life. Her ambition is to have her paintings emphasize this philosophy.
